Tips and Tricks for using iOS 9 and El Capitan: A Public Beta Preview

Apple's public betas for iOS 9 and OS X El Capitan have been available since July 2015. These pre-releases give users a sneak peek into the latest features and improvements before the official releases. In this post, we will cover some tips and tricks to help you make the most out of your experience with iOS 9 on your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch, and OS X El Capitan on your Mac.

iOS 9: Tips and Tricks

  1. Use Slide Over and Split View: Slide Over allows you to open a second app on the right side of your iPad in a smaller window. Swipe from the right edge to access it. Split View lets you run two apps side by side. Swipe from the left or right edge to bring up the other app.
  2. QuickType Keyboard: With iOS 9, the QuickType keyboard now suggests words as you type based on your current context. For example, if you're writing an email, it might suggest "You're welcome" when you type 'yw'. To turn on this feature go to Settings > General > Keyboard.
  3. Search within Apps: The improved Spotlight search now lets you search for content within apps as well as your device. Swipe down from the home screen to access Spotlight search and then tap 'Apple App Store' or any other app.
  4. News App: iOS 9 comes with a new News app that aggregates articles from various sources based on your interests. To set up the News app, open it and sign in with your Apple ID. Tap the 'For You' tab to see articles tailored to your preferences.
  5. Battery Life Management: iOS 9 includes Low Power Mode which helps conserve battery life when you're running low. Go to Settings > Battery > Low Power Mode to turn it on manually or enable it automatically when your battery level drops below a certain percentage.

El Capitan: Tips and Tricks

  1. Split View: El Capitan supports Split View which lets you use two apps side by side on your Mac. Simply open the first app, then swipe right from the left edge of the screen to reveal Mission Control. Find the second app in the Dock or Launchpad and drag it into a Split View pane.
  2. Mission Control: This feature allows you to view all your open spaces at once. Swipe up with three fingers to access Mission Control. You can also use it to switch between desktops, create new ones, and arrange windows as needed.
  3. Quick Look: Quick Look lets you preview files without having to open their original applications. Right-click a file in the Finder and select 'Quick Look' from the context menu. Press the Space Bar to view the full screen preview.
  4. Picture in Picture: Watch videos while working with other apps using this feature. Play a video in Safari, then click the 'Full Screen' button to enter Picture in Picture mode. The video will float above all other windows.
  5. Natural Language Processing: El Capitan includes advanced Natural Language Processing capabilities which allow it to understand context and extract information from text. This can be useful for tasks such as data entry or writing emails.

By implementing these tips and tricks, you'll enjoy a more productive and enjoyable experience with iOS 9 on your iOS device and OS X El Capitan on your Mac. Remember that these are pre-releases and there might be some bugs or instability compared to the final versions. Happy exploring!
