Tips: How to Activate the Fn Key Function on Lenovo Laptops

If you are a Lenovo laptop user, you might have encountered situations where the Fn key doesn't work as expected. Don't worry! In this blog post, we will guide you through the process of activating the Fn key function on your Lenovo laptop.

Checking the Fn Key Lock

The Fn key lock is a common feature that disables the Fn keys and makes them behave like standard F and J keys. To check if the Fn key lock is enabled:

  1. Press the Fn + F12 keys at the same time. The Num Lock indicator light on your keyboard should turn off if the Fn key lock is active. If the Num Lock light turns on, then the Fn key lock is deactivated.

Changing Fn Key Behavior using Lenovo Vantage

Lenovo Vantage is a system utility application that lets you manage your laptop's performance, updates, and settings, including Fn key behavior. Here's how to use it:

  1. Download and install Lenovo Vantage from the official website if you haven't already.
  2. Open Lenovo Vantage and sign in using your Lenovo ID or create a new account if needed.
  3. In the dashboard, click on "Settings."
  4. Under "Performance & Power," select "Keyboards & Touchpad."
  5. Find the "Fn Key Behavior" option and choose the desired setting: "Legacy Fn mode (FN+F keys act as Media keys)" or "Windows Key as Fn key (FN+F keys act as standard F1-F12 keys)."
  6. Click on "Save" to apply changes.

Now, check if the Fn keys are working according to your chosen setting.

Using BIOS settings

If Lenovo Vantage doesn't work or if you prefer to modify settings directly in the BIOS, follow these steps:

  1. Restart your laptop and press the F2 key during boot to enter the BIOS setup menu.
  2. Navigate using the arrow keys and find the "Keyboard" tab.
  3. Change the "Fn Key Mode" setting to either "Legacy Fn mode" or "Fn Key as Function Keys," depending on your preference.
  4. Press F10 to save and exit the BIOS setup menu.
  5. Restart your laptop and check if the Fn keys are functioning correctly.

By following one of these methods, you should be able to activate the Fn key function on your Lenovo laptop and enjoy a more productive experience. If you have any questions or face any issues during the process, feel free to leave a comment below. Happy computing!
