How to Update Android OTA (Over-the-Air) Without Losing Root

Android's Over-the-Air (OTA) updates are essential for receiving the latest security patches and system improvements. However, some users who have rooted their devices may be concerned that these updates could result in losing root access. In this blog post, we will show you how to update your Android device OTA while keeping your root access.

Prerequisites

Before proceeding with the steps, ensure that your device meets the following requirements:

  1. Your device is rooted.
  2. You have a custom recovery installed (such as TWRP).
  3. You have backup of important data.
  4. The OTA update is available for download.

Steps to Update Android OTA with Root Access

1. Check for OTA Update

First, check if an OTA update is available for your device by going to Settings > System updates > Check for update. If an update is available, tap on Download and install now. The system will begin downloading the update file, and you can proceed to the next steps.

2. Download the Stock Firmware

Before updating the OTA, it's recommended to have the stock firmware of your device downloaded and saved on your computer. You can find the stock firmware on your manufacturer's website or from trusted sources. Make sure that the downloaded firmware matches your device model and Android version.

3. Boot into Recovery Mode

Reboot your device into recovery mode. The method for entering recovery mode may vary depending on your device, but it generally involves holding down specific buttons during the boot process (e.g., Volume Up + Power). Once you've entered recovery mode, you should see a menu with several options.

4. Install Update.zip

In the recovery menu, select Install, then navigate to the location where you downloaded the stock firmware update file (the .zip file) on your device. Swipe to confirm the installation. The flashing process will begin. Once it's complete, go back to the main recovery menu and tap on Reboot system now.

5. Perform OTA Update

Now that you have installed the stock firmware, you can proceed with the OTA update. Go back to the home screen on your device and check for updates again by going to Settings > System updates > Check for update. If the update is still available, tap on Download and install now. The system will begin downloading the OTA update file and installing it on your device.

6. Verify Root Access

After completing the OTA update, you should verify that you still have root access on your device. You can do this by opening a root-checking app (such as Magisk Manager or Root Checker) to confirm that the root access is still functional.

Conclusion

Updating your Android device OTA while keeping root access may seem daunting, but with the proper preparations and steps, it can be done safely. By following this guide, you'll be able to enjoy the latest security patches and system improvements without compromising your root privileges. Remember always to back up important data before proceeding. Happy updating!
